Welcome

Welcome to the University of Iowa - Des Moines Internal Medicine Residency Program.  Our fully accredited three-year residency training program is a cooperative effort involving the University of Iowa and three Des Moines medical centers:  Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Broadlawns Medical Center, and the Des Moines Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  These three institutions provide our residents with unique opportunity:  the chance to train in three outstanding, University-affiliated medical centers.  Our residents have the opportunity to develop strong clinical skills in an environment where common and unusual medical disorders are seen.

More than one-third of total training time is spent in a variety of outpatient settings.  Our faculty includes an outstanding number of general internists actively involved in teaching and serving as excellent role models.  Subspecialty rotations feature one-on-one teaching by dedicated faculty and a broad exposure to patient care activities, integrating inpatient and outpatient care.

The University of Iowa - Des Moines Internal Medicine Residency Program is part of the Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium, Inc., a family of general and primary care residency programs all affiliated with the University of Iowa.  Our internal medicine residency program offers eight categorical positions each year.  In addition, two appointments are available for one-year preliminary medicine positions.  Other available training opportunities in the Consortium include transitional year, family medicine, pediatrics, and general surgery residency programs.  Our residents interact daily with these other residents who also train at our three teaching institutions.

Des Moines is a great place to live and work, a wonderful blend of people and places.  A center for business, government, education, culture and the arts, the Des Moines metropolitan area supports a population of close to 500,000 people.

We are proud of the program available here.  We enjoy the challenge of preparing residents to not only be primary care physicians, but physicians who can manage more complex diagnostic and therapeutic problems as well.  Our residents receive individualized teaching and mentoring, and have an opportunity to tailor the curriculum to meet their personal career goals.  Primary care, subspecialty and hospitalist medicine career training tracks are available which allow residents to develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their chosen career paths.
